First fix carpentry involves all the structural and foundational woodwork that goes into a building before the plastering is done. Second fix carpentry, on the other hand, comprises all the aesthetic, visible finishing work completed after the walls are plastered and the interior is decorated.
1st Fix Carpentry
First fix carpentry is the first phase of two when a constructing a building. The first phase involves all of the work from its foundations to becoming ready for plastering. This stage starts from the shell (or frame) of the building to the point of decorating.
The first fix carpentry tasks include:
- Studwork
- Floating Floors
- Staircases
- Windows
- Window Boards
- Exterior Doors
- Internal Door Linings
- Noggins
- Mid/Full height bathroom boxing’s
2nd Fix Carpentry
Second fix includes all of the work that happens after the plastering process. The second fix carpenter’s role is to ensure that the woodwork of the building has all of the finishing touches.
The tasks that happen during second fix include:
- Internal hardwood and softwood doors
- Architraves to door linings
- Skirting and mouldings
- Pre-formed door sets
